Night School Voices (2009)

New York City is full of stories that could delight, teach and move, but they are seldom written down by the people who live them.  Stories of the rich and famous are everywhere, but stories of working people are hard to find and mostly written by others.  This book is the beginning of an attempt to right that balance. It comes out of a Queens College Urban Studies class at the Center for Workers' Education in Manhattan.  This is an adult education program at the Murphy Institute, created for union members and partly subsidized by the labor movement. The stories in this book were written by the students in my 2009 and 2010 "Urban Voices" classes.
